LAGRACIA ESPECÍFICA DE LA “MATERNIDAD DIVINA” Y EL TÍTULO DE MARÍA “MADRE DE LA IGLESIA” BERNARDINO DE ARMELLADA OFMCAP. M adrid El concilio Vaticano II pasó por alto el título de María como ‘Madre de la Iglesia’. No obstante lo proclamó Pablo VI en su discurso de clausura de la misma etapa conciliar. La aceptación tímida por parte de algunos teólogos que veían a María más como mujer sencilla en el Pueblo de Dios que como soberana al lado de Cristo, fue causa u ocasión de una decadencia en la litera­ tura y devoción mañanas que duró unos 10 años hasta la reacción del pueblo cristiano alentada por Pablo VI (Marialis cultus) y Juan Pablo II (Redemptoris Mater). Aquí tratamos de ver cómo teológicamente el título de ‘Madre de la Iglesia’ le corresponde a María en virtud de la gracia de la Maternidad divina, propia sólo de María, mientras la gracia de la ‘filiación divina’ en Cristo le es común con todos los cristianos. Superior como Madre, igual como hermana. Los dos tipos de mariología (cristocéntrica y eclesiotípica) no son contrarios sino complementarios. Vatican II did not deem it opportune to include the title “Mother of the Church” in its Constitution Lumen Gentium , VIII, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Nevertheless, Pope Paul VI solemnly pronounced this title at the closing phase of the same council. The timid acceptation by some theologians who saw Mary more as a humble woman among the People of God than as a sovereign beside Christ, was occasion of a decadence in Marian literature and devotion till the Christian faithful reacted (Marialis cultus; Redemptoris Mater). We see how the title ‘Mother of the Church’ corresponds to Mary by reason of the grace of Divine Maternity, proper only of Mary. As Mother of Christ Mary is Mother of the Church and of every Christian: As mother superior to us and as sister equal to us. The two types of Mariology (Christocentric and Ecclesiotypical) are not contrary to one another but complementary.
