LOS ANTECEDENTES DE LA SOCIOLOGÍA PORTUGUESA ÁNGEL INFESTAS GIL Universidad de Salamanca Modernidad y sociología suelen ser consideradas como dos dimensiones de un mismo fenómeno, que resume los procesos de cambio experimentados por las sociedades europeas durante los siglos XVIII y XIX. La modernidad como transformación de las estructuras del antiguo orden social, así como de sus fundamentos legitimadores; y la sociología como reflexión sobre esos cam­ bios, como intento de comprenderlos y explicarlos científicamente. En este artículo se aplican esos supuestos a la implantación institucional de la sociología en Portugal, que tuvo lugar en la última parte del siglo pasado. Tras describir las etapas más importantes que marcan su desarrollo, se dedica un primer apartado a describir sus antecedentes remotos y las vicisitudes que sufrió durante la dictadura salazarista; en un segundo apartado, se analiza con detalle todo el proceso de su institucionalización inicial, dedicando una atención especial a las aportaciones de Adérito Sedas Nunes y su grupo; para comentar, en una tercera parte, los rasgos más específicos que la caracterizan en esos momentos iniciales. Modernity and sociology are usually considered as two dimensions of the same phenomenon that sums up the processes of change undergone by the European societies during the 19th and 20th centuries. We try to explain scientifically the modernity as a transformation of the structures of the old social order and the sociology as a reflection of such changes. In this article we try to apply these suppositions to the institutional establis­ hment of the sociology in Portugal that took place at the end of the last century. After describing the most important stages of this development we deve­ lop three stages: the first one, to trace the distant backgrounds and difficulties suffered under the Salazar's dictatorship; the second one, to analyze in great detail the whole process of its initial institutionalization, giving special attention to the contributions of Adérito Sedas Nunes and his group; and lastly, to com­ ment on the most specific features of those initial moments.
