Williams no es, propiamente hablando, un teórico de la ciencia eclesiológica. Sus re­ flexiones sobre la Iglesia o el Reino de Cristo —conceptos totalmente idénticos en su pensamiento— , no nacen de principios apriorísticos e indeterminados sino que se fraguan en el quehacer diario, repleto de angustias y tensiones, haciendo constante referencia a una situación histórica, traducida en términos de política religiosa. Concretamente, y en la cuestión que nos concierne en estos momentos, su producción teológica responde a una necesidad vital de intervención ante un Modelo de Iglesia y de sociedad política, propuesto por las autoridades eclesiásticas de Nueva Inglaterra cuyo espíritu estaba, según él, más cercano a la ley mosaica que al cristianismo 234.
