Además, aún negando el castigo corporal que algunos invocan al interpretar este pasaje evangélico, el castigo infligido a los fariseos se considera superior a cualquier pena corporal de este mundo por las razones siguientes: — Los falsos maestros son, por justo juicio de Dios, ciegos abso­ lutos. El castigo de Dios, privándoles de su entendimiento y sabidu­ ría espirituales, es infinitamente superior al del magistrado civil que pudiera haber ordenado que les fueran arrancados los ojos del cuerpo. — Es lamentable la ceguera de aquellos para quienes práctica­ mente no existe curación. ¿Qué más desesperada condición que la de aquellos a quienes el Señor ha abandonado como si se tratase de en­ fermos incurables? — El fin de estos pecadores es el hoyo, es decir, la separación radical y eterna de la presencia del Padre de las luces. — Entre aquellos que caen al hoyo, tanto guías como seguidores, la condición más deplorable es la de los guías, sobre quienes recae la ruina no sólo de sus almas sino la de sus seguidores, condenados al tormento eterno. «Beside, let it be seriously considered by such as plead for present cor- porall punishment, as conceiving that such sinners (though they breake not Civill peace) should not escape unpunished, I say, let it be conside­ red, though for the present their punishment is deferred, yet the punish­ ment inflicted on them will be found to amount to an higher pitch then any corporall punishment in the World beside, and that in these foure respects» 198.
