ABSTRACT This paper analyses the term xáris - grace-, one of the most fúndamental concepts of Christianity and a concept still insufficiently studied scientifically in pre-Cliristian culture - the early Hellenistic literature prior to the precise usage of St. Paul - Homer, Hesiod, Anaximenes of Miletus, Democritus, Xenophanes, Aristotle, etc. In this pre-Christian literature the meaning is given as grace, brilliance, joy, favour, free gift, gratuitousness, graciousness, divine help, light, peace, power, spirit manifestation of the gods and of their power. This study also brings together the meaning in the Gospeis and sorne texts of St. Peter. St. Paul, for his part, taking all these meanings into account, decided on the term xáris - grace - as meaning participation in the divine life as a particular gift (especially in Jesus Christ) while taking in the previous rneanings.
