ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to analyse some of the cognitive models that are found in Oliver Cromwell’s political speeches, to wit: conceptual metaphors and image schematic structures. Some of those cognitive models are based on metaphors used in the bible and Cromwell takes advantage of those in order to establish the conceptual correspondence between two domains: a source domain, mainly, taken from the Old Testament, and a target domain, which is Cromwell’s government. The Lord Protector uses in a strategic way his religious knowledge in order to reproduce and maintain his ideology likewise he is legitimising his powerful position.
