5'"4 CHINESE MUSIC. No. 8.-The P,ien-:.;hung (~ ~), or "bell-chime," is an instrument composed of r6 bells suspended upon a frame. It is made on the same principle as the pien-ch'i11g, or "stone– chime," and, like that instrument, is of the greatest antiquity. The Yellow Emperor– HUANG Tr (B.C. 2697)- used a chime composed of 12 bells, agreeing with the lus ; the Chou dynasty (B.C. uoo to 255) had c~es of ~ix diameter ; of these, however, nothmg remams and mne bells, decr~asing graduall . ,. but a meagre descnption in tl Y _m size and 1 e native records.
