In the face of the avalanche of letters of remonstrance from India, the Carmelite General Superiors appeared to back– track. It was then that the Propaganda Fide intervened forcibly, threatening the Carmelite Order with dire consequences for its Missions, if its Superiors were to go back on the decision they had already taken as regards the Vicariate of Bombay4 1 • At this stage the Carmelite General Superiors reacquired their poise and stood their ground. Accordingly they coerced their Fathers in Bombay into falling in line with the decisions already taken and which were then formally confirmed by the Propaganda 42 • Since the formula worked out for changing hands of the administration of the Vicariate of Bombay had hit a snag and consequently bad blood had been created, the way the curtain fell on the long spell of service by the Carmelite Fathers there, betrayed a few isolated events of an anticlimactic nature 43 • Some of these Fathers believed that since they had sweated blood in giving the Vi– cariate a formidable economic and administrative framework, they were entitled notificavi, in qua pater Andreas pattern Irenaeum valde monuit, ut in Bombay maneret, vel in Malabar se retraheret, eo quad mendacia, quibus Carmelitani mis~ione privati fuissent, apparere inciperent, et Romae res iam meliorem aspectum induerent, etc. etc. Quam episto– lam propriis oculis ante paucos dies vidi". 41 AGCarm, Gran Mogu/268-3. 42 AGCarm, Gran Mogul 268-e, Rome 21 March 1954: "Trasmetto a V.R. copia della lettera di Mons.
