ESTABLISHMENT OF CAPUCHIN ORDER IN INDIA 233 There was nothing more for the General Superiors to do than to nominate a General Commissary in order to bolster the Order's Novitiate in India from crumbling 112 • The issue of Fr Benedict's removal from the office of Guardian was a thorny one. Prima fade the dismissal was found invalid, and a formal declaration to that effect was made by the Commissary. As soon as his position was vindicated, Fr Benedict without the least hesi– tation tendered his resignation 113 • Fr Raphael of Figline was appointed furono chieste informazioni a Monsig. Jacopi sembro, che con quella pomina si togliesse a lui ogni autorita, e ne ebbe gran disgusto. Quando poi vide, che ii Superiore Regolare si adoperava di riordinare il noviziato di Mussoorie, gli fece tanta opposizione, che quello fu costretto a rinunziare. Allara sul fine de] 1888 fu inviato da Lahore un P. Visitatore per comporre le cose di quel noviziato d'accordo con Monsi– gnore; ma quantumque il Visitatore procedesse con ogni prudenza, dopo sei mesi di trattative con S. Ecc. R.ma non approdo quasi a nulla, eccetto che pote constatare non poche irregolarita de] Noviziato, le quali poi divennero sempre piu manifestate dopo che g]i furono prorogati i poteri di Visitatore e Superiore Regolare interno. E cosi fu chiesta ed .ottenuta la sanatoria della · professione di tre chierici, ed ora si espone il caso di uno di essi ricevuto senza Documenti da Monsig. Jacopi, e che ora si viene a sapere, che fu battezzato nella setta ang]icana. Si vede pertanto, che Monsig. AGCap, AH 10, Acta Congregation. pro missionibus, 11: The Meeting held on 21 November 1888 commissioned Fr Mark of Faverges to carry out "the visit of the Friary and Novitiate of Mussoorie". In his letter of 10 December 1888 he acknowledged receipt of the registered letter, nominating him "General Commis– sary for the Question of the Friary of Mussoorie". He alluded to "certain difficulties" that had arisen between the Archbishop and the Regular Superior of Agra. Cf. As a matter of fact he arrived on 12 January 1889 accompanied by the Regular Superior and left the Friary on 16 of the same month.
