224 BENEDICT VADAKKEKARA had been to his entire satisfaction, failed to induce him to retract his demand for the Lector's recall. As far as the General Superiors were concerned Fr Louis was a persona non grata in Mgr Jacopi's Vicariate and they were duty-bound to respect his mind-set. It was, therefore, only a matter of time before the issue ran its course. By September 1886 an atmosphere of stiff coldness had descended on Mussoorie. This became clearly manifest on 29 September on the occasion of the celebration of Mgr Jacopi' s name-day 76 • The threat of "closure" of the Novitiate hung over the Friary of Mussoorie like a sword of Democles and there were signs that a witch-hunt was in the offing 77 • Meanwhile Mgr Jacopi pleaded \Vith Fr General to reac– tivate the Novitiate. In the latter half of December 1886 crucial cfecisions were taken in Rome which had far-reaching consequenc_es for the Novitiate and the Study of Mussoorie. Fr Louis was issued the, letter of Obeclience for returning to his Province 78 • Mgr Jacopi was told to __take a series of measures with a view to guaranteeing a smooth functioning of the Novitiate and the Study. He was to consult the Master and appoint 76 APCapTusc Missione Indostan, Fr Louis' Memorie, 97£: "Quest'oge! ricorreva pu– re la festa de! Vescovo, S. Michele Arc[angelo]; ma non siamo andati, secondo ii solito degli altri anni, nel refettorio comune, per ragioni che qui si tacciono. Non vi e stata Messa cantata, e neppure e suonata l'armonium... ". 77 APCapTusc Missione Indostan, Fr Louis' Diario "1886, 26 September": "Giorni sono poi ii V.[escovo] disse al P. Maestro, che se ii Generale chiudera ii Noviziatp, la colpa sara nostra, come se i Canoni sieno stati fatti da noi, e come se noi avessimo fabbricato al Collegio cio che fu finito toglierci quella poca liberta che si godeva prima. Siamo sempre Ii: la favola de! lupo e dell'agnello! Gli Studenti mi hanno interrogato riguardo a questa risposta de! V[escovo] e mi hanno detto averla saputa dallo stesso P. Maestro." Later as rejoinder to a joint-letter to Mgrs Jacopi, Pesci and Tosi, Fr General resolutely defended the measures adopted regarding the Novitiate: AAAgra A.D. D.10 n.48: Fr General to Mgrs Apostolic Vicars, Rome 14 January 1887: "In secondo luogo si vuole, che prima di prendere qualunque determinazione, rimettiamo ai Superiori locali le lognanze che Ci dirigono i Missionari, al fine di verificare la sincerita de! rappor– to. - Ma i rapporti Noi Ii verifichiamo in altro modo da non compromettere nessuno. E se questo articolo si vuole alludere alla sospensione de! Noviziato di Mussoorie, possia– mo assicura;e l,e EE.LL.RR. che non fu sospeso sul rapporto dei particolari, ma su quello di Mons. Jacopi,' da noi risulta che non erano molte condizioni volute dai Sacri Canoni". 78 APCapTusc, Missione Indostan, Incarto II, Fr General· to Fr Louis, Rome 24 December 1886: "Condiscendiamo alle istanze di V.P.R. e Le concediamo ii merito della S. Obbedienza per fare ritorno alla sua Provincia. Intanto La ringraziamo di cuore per i servizi da Lei prestati nell'istruzione di cotesti Nastri Studenti in Mussoorie...".
