Without mincing his words Fr General told Fr Christopher that neither he nor any of his Fathers should impede the Commissary from executing what had been resolved and that there was no question of rethinking on what had already been deter– mined. The Commissary's mandate was not limited to the Novitiate of Sardha– na, and this signified that Fr Christopher himself was being warned 85 • It took two months for Fr General's letter of 15 August to reach the addressee. Fr Christopher was not the type to pocket his pride without remonstrance. "With all trust and respect ever inspired by filial submission" he begged leave to make some observations on the all too plain orders issued to him. He said that he had already permitted the Commissary to take the students to Mussoorie as a pro– visional measure. But on his own authority he could not adopt a measure that went against the mind of the entire Mission. No doubt, his fighting words did not bode well for the nascent institution 86 • The Commissary's letter of 1 October 1924 spoke of an undeclared truce, as he reported that three clerics and Fr Arsenius of Sant'Agata Feltria had already taken up quarters at the Friary of Mussoorie and that on that very day three others would be joining them. But he was uncertain whether the truce would hold on for long. Trattasi di cosa per se evidente e su cui non·conviene fermarsi a discutere. Non era stata mia intenzione che il mandato di Commissario Generale peril M.R.P. Commissario, di cui parla la P.V.Rev.ma, non mi sembra tanto chiaro da quanto si esprime nella sua ultima, e potra facilmente causare un po' di confusione, come difatti ce ne e gia stato un segno nel Monastero stesso di Mussoorie, dove il P. Commissario poggiandosi sul Mandato voleva senz'altro prendere ii posto de! Superiore locale canonicamente eletto dai Superiori della Missione. Questo Mandato non so se sia soltanto per la Missione di Agra. Per ora e stato cosi; infatti nessun posto delle altre Missioni e stato per ora toccato. Potro sbagliare, ma mi sembra che si crei uno stato di due Superiori in una Missione sempre con una certa preoccupazione di vedersi portar via un posto o l'altro quando cio facesse comodo o per Studio o per Professorio o altro".
