Opening the Study in the Friary of Mussoorie would now be an uphill task since the house came directly under the jurisdiction of Agra's Regular Superior. Therefore, if his continuance in office were to get results, his role as Commissary needed to be redefined. He requested the General for some papers to strengthen his hands in carrying through the plans already framed 73 . Fr General reiterated his stand that the Commissary's office be distinct from that of the Regular Superior; from Brazil where he was on visit, he wrote to the General Procurator in Rome reconfirming the ?ecisions already taken. If the Commissary were to be a Regular Superior, he would not be fully free to serve as the General Commissary for the Novitiate and the Study. In the General's judgement, the Commissary's nomination ipse facto empowered him to carry out his commission; he did not need extra documents to have his office rein– forced74.
