The first examines in the following order: topics of pre-Franciscan Europe, sources of early Franciscanism, Francis - the Saint and the man-, the expansion of the three Orders, its influence on medieval society. The second treats the problem of the norrns of Franciscan art and chiefly the influence of Franciscanism on architecture, sculpture, painting, miniatures, music and literature as found in the catalogues of the above expositions. Of particular interest, in the judgement of the author, is the prominence given to the liturgy, Franciscan miniatures, and chancery (official) documentation.
