BENEDICTVADAKKEKARA REFOCUSING ON MGR ANASTASIUS HARTMANN IN THE LIGHT OF FNE INEDITED LETIERS The figure, the lifeway and the multifarious accomplisbments of the Ser– vant of God Anastasius Hartmann (1803-1866) 1 bave been the object of many a dose scrutiny and the findings of these investigations bave seen the light of day2. His correspondence as well as the epistolary and other documentary sou.rces on him too bave already been made accessible to the public 3 • In fact these provide the researcbers and students of ecclesiastica! history with a mine of information on the various developments in India in the middle of the nineteenth century, thus enabling them to flesh out on va.òous aspects of the lùstory of the Chu.rch in India. To all intents Hartmann's was a time wben fortuitously the course of Christianity in that subcontinent was traversing agi– tateci waters.
