LA ESCUELA AGUSTINIANA EN LA NUEVA ESPAÑA Miguel Anxo Pena González Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca Resumen: En este artículo nos acercamos al pensamiento que, partiendo del agustino fray Alonso de la Veracruz, se va asentando entre los agustinos que se trasladan a las Indias Occidentales, donde se desarrolla una tesis propia acerca del reconocimiento de la condición humana de todo individuo y, especialmen- te, de los naturales de aquellas tierras. En este sentido, el trabajo aborda la sin- gular aportación de fray Juan de Zapata y Sandoval, en la primera mitad del siglo XVII , con su obra De iustitia distributiva , en la cual, además de hacer un ale- gato, justifica canónica, jurídica y moralmente por qué, en los cargos del gobier- no de aquellas tierras, tanto civiles como eclesiásticos, deben tener preferencia los naturales de las mismas, no siendo preferidos frente a los peninsulares, como se hacía con bastante facilidad. Palabras clave: Equidad, Justicia distributiva, Fray Alonso de la Veracruz, Fray Juan de Zapata y Sandoval, Agustinos, Cargos de gobierno Abstract: Based on the mind of the friar Alonso de la Veracruz, this essay dis- cusses the thinking that was taking place among the Augustine friars stationed in the Western Indies, where local ideas about the recognition of human condi- tion of any individual, and particularly, of the natives of the New World, evolved. In this regard, this essay analyzes the unique contribution of fray Juan de Za- pata y Sandoval, De iustitia distributiva , which dates from the first half of the 17th century. Besides making a strong plea, this work justifies canonically, juridically and morally the reasons why the ecclesiastical and civil authorities should give priority to the naturales , that is, Indians and criollos , instead of those peninsular Spaniards, as it was done quite easily.
